Pioneering Agricultural Intelligence in Nigeria

Published on August 16, 2025

Earlier this year, Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture, with Synergos Nigeria as its technical partner and AGRA as funder, launched the country’s first Agriculture Intelligence Unit (AIU) – an office within the Ministry hosting a real-time data dashboard that is transforming how government, farmers, and private stakeholders understand and respond to trends in the agricultural sector.

We’re proud to have played a key role in pioneering this digital platform. Since its launch, two other Nigerian states have showed interest in replicating this model, signaling a shift in how agricultural practice is being shaped across Nigeria.

Turning Agriculture into Intelligence

Synergos has been aiming to support Kaduna State to treat agriculture not just as subsistence, but as a business. In that sense, the AIU is a space that brings together data from across the value chain to help the government:

  • Monitor market prices and trends
  • Understand changes in supply and demand for different kinds of crops
  • Track private sector actors, from seed suppliers to processors
  • Guide investments based on reliable data
  • Make data accessible to farmers, helping them understand their costs, returns, and productivity

The platform is also building trust. Companies are voluntarily disclosing their activities and data, farmers are getting better insight into market behavior, and policymakers are using evidence to establish their priorities.

As Abubakar Abba Umar, Permanent Secretary of Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture points out, ‘the Agricultural Intelligence Unit is more than a data hub; it is the brain of our agricultural sector.’

Building Systems that Last

This project is a collaborative system designed for sustainability:

  • Staff from the Ministry of Agriculture are being continuously trained to manage the platform and ensure high data quality.
  • Data is stored in the cloud and securely backed up offline.
  • Feedback loops and performance evaluations are built into the platform’s governance.
  • New partners are stepping forward: one organization is already in discussions to help sustain the initiative beyond the initial two years of this project.

We are thrilled to know that the government itself is telling the story of this platform’s value. That credibility, combined with Synergos’ trusted relationships built over in Kaduna, is what’s helping to inspire replication in other Nigerian states.

In the words of Rufus Idris, AGRA Country Director, ‘the Agricultural Intelligence Unit represents the future of agriculture in Africa, driven by data, powered by innovation.’

As other states begin to adopt their own versions of this model, we’re honored to have helped Kaduna lead the way, and excited to support this movement.
