"Yesterday, I had the chance to tune into a fascinating online conversation between Stacy Palmer, CEO of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, and Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation, where they explored the Foundation’s decision to spend down its endowment by 2050 and what this signals for the future of philanthropy.
Suzman emphasized that the Foundation’s core priorities remain unchanged: eradication of infectious diseases, education, and maternal health—with education being the main focus in the U.S. He also spoke about the importance of collaboration, urging foundations to work more closely together to pool resources and knowledge.
Moreover, he acknowledged a tension that many in the sector feel: while philanthropy can't—and shouldn’t—replace government, it has the freedom to take risks and innovate in ways others can’t. That said, he noted a real fear across the field about how to do philanthropy at scale in a way that’s both effective and lasting.
And of course, AI came up as it does everywhere these days. Suzman called it a transformative force that will touch every sector, including philanthropy. It’s clear that navigating this technological shift will be a key part of the Foundation’s strategy moving forward.
What struck me most was his quiet call for courage—not just in giving more, but in giving differently. As Synergos has been exploring this year, the future of philanthropy demands boldness: to act collectively, take risks, and lead with purpose in the face of uncertainty."
