Simmons Center for Global Chicago: Advocating for Language Justice

Published on November 27, 2024

The Simmons Center for Global Chicago, a nonprofit center serving over 60 international NGOs and partner organizations with a footprint in Chicago and working around the world held its fourth symposium this month on the topic of the Power of Language, deepening our understanding of language justice. Expert panelists including Lilach Shafir from the Obama Foundation and Phoebe De Padua from Foundation for a Just Society described their language justice journeys.

Facilitated conversations with participants covered areas including global language justice, decolonizing language and the right to translation and interpretation for international populations in the US. With 75 attendees, it was a great way for Simmons Center members and others to make connections and learn from each other.

Earlier this year, in a GPC crossover, the Center was happy to welcome laureates from the Archery Foundation as part of their visit to Chicago in July, as well as facilitate some other introductions for the group.
