Wavemaking: Inspired Impact with David Evans Shaw

Published on May 7, 2025

On the latest episode of Synergos' Cultivate the Soul podcast, Synergos' Spiritual Civilization Senior Advisor Gretchen Ki Steidle had an uplifting conversation with GPC member David Evans Shaw.

David Shaw is CEO of Black Point Group, with wide-ranging interests in technology companies, impact investing and public service activism.

Shaw’s career has included extensive public service in science, arts, conservation and public policy. He has served on the faculty of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and the Visiting Committee of the MIT Media Lab. He has been a global leader in science-based conservation of nature, supporting his advocacy interests with the production of documentary films and is the author of a 2024 book entitled Wave Making: Inspired By Impact. Shaw is resident of the State of Maine along with his children and 12 grandchildren.

With nature as his biggest source of spiritual inspiration, he talks about how the oceans - Earth's largest habitat - are still a mysterious ecosystem. He highlights the importance of mapping and better understanding the oceans so that conservation efforts are truly effective.

For Shaw, being immersed in nature brings a sense of generosity, caring, and responsibility. It also evokes wonder, humility, and the realization that we are all connected in the complexity of "Spaceship Earth". "I try to cultivate a daily practice of awe", he says.

In his book (available here), he urges people to embrace the benefits of struggles, because they can be the path for great achievements.
