Tracy Ferron: Transformation Through Art in California Prisons

Published on September 23, 2024

GPC member Tracy Ferron announces the opening of Visions of Hope art installation at the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, CA, from Sept 5-Oct 24, 2024. This installation features the art and voices of over 200 men and women incarcerated in California state prisons and was produced by Ferron and her team at the arts nonprofit, Life On Art, in collaboration with the People’s Commission For the Integrity in Criminal Justice.

Visions of Hope showcases the unique power of art to catalyze healing and provide hope in some of the darkest situations.  Life On Art’s Heart Story workshops begin with a gift of a winged-heart sculpture made by local community volunteers. The incarcerated men and women are then invited into a six-week program exploring their personal stories in painting and expressive writing. A documentary film team recorded stories, poems and songs. The resulting installation builds bridges of empathy and advocacy with people most impacted by systemic inequalities in America. A virtual tour of the installation is available through the free application Bloomberg Connects by searching for Life On Art.

Life On Art creates spaces for meaningful connection and creative expression focused on healing from systemic and personal trauma. Their innovative large-scale artworks made by hundreds of people spark a sense of collective purpose and hope.  Life On Art is developing a blueprint for these large-scale participatory public art projects.
